East-Mexican White-skipper Heliopetes sublinea 1st US Record, October 22, 2004 This skipper was first photographed by us on October 22, 2004, but we were new to butterfly photography and study then and didn't know what it was or that it might be rare. Our bug was not cooperative and didn't stay around for many photos. We didn't think the photos were good enough to keep, so into the computer recycle bin they went! Benton Basham and Janet Rathjen discovered one the next day (October 23), and photographed it. They knew they had something new for the US and reported their find. Word got out that their skipper was Heliopetes sublinea, a new US record. A few days later, Mike was going through the recycle bin on his computer looking for a different photo and he found the photo below. He knew it matched the photo he saw of Benton and Janet's. He restored this photo and the few others we took of this bug and sent them to Mike Quinn for evaluation. Our photos turned out to be Heliopetes sublinea, making our sighting technically a first US record. Benton Basham and Janet Rathjen are rightfully given full credit for this US record, as our photos would never have been submitted for review if Benton and Janet had not been such sharp observers. |
