The following is a selected portion of the Will of Samuel Carr, maternal grandfather of Samuel Shew (Shuey), from
the Frederick County/ Carroll County area of Maryland as filed in the Carroll County Courthouse:
In the name of God, amen, I , Samuel Carr of Carroll County in the State of Maryland, being in health . . .
Item: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sidney Ann Shew, wife of Henry Shew, the sum of five hundred dollars,
to be invested by my executors as hereinafter mentioned for her sole and separate use, the interest accruing thereto to
be paid to her by my said executors at such time or times, as they in their judgement may deem expedient, and best
calculated to promote her comfort, and the principal so invested at her death to be equally divided between her
children share and share alike.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my grand son, Samuel Shew, son of my daughter Sidney Ann Shew, wife of Henry
Shew, the sum of one hundred dollars.

... State of Maryland City of Baltimore, ss:
On this 22nd day of November, 1923, before me, the undersigned, personally appeared Samuel H. Shue, who makes
the following declaration as an application for pension under the provisions of the act of Congress approved May 1,
1920.
That he is 81 years of age; that he was born July 4th, 1842 at Carroll County Maryland.
That he is the is the identical Samuel H. Shue, who ENLISTED Aug 29 1864 at Harper's Ferry, Jd, under the name
of Samuel H. Shue, in Company E, 13th Regiment Md Vol Infantry Civil War, and was honorably DISCHARGED May
29 1865 at Baltimore, Md, having served in the United States, in the Civil War War.
...
That otherwise than herein stated he was not employed in the United States Military or Naval Service.
That his personal description at time of first enlistment was as follows: Height 5 feet 7 inches; complexion Light;
color of eyes grey; color of hair Sandy; that his occupation was Shoemaker.
That since leaving the service he has resided at Carroll County, until last 3 months when he moved to Baltimore
and his occupation has been Shoemaker having retired for sometime.
That he requires the regular personal aid and attendance of another person and has required such aid and Samuel H. Shue

attendance since July 1st - 1923 on account of the following disabilities: Paralytic stroke, completely helpless on right
side, almost stone deaf, and suffeing with complications and (other) infirmates on acct. of extreme age. partly
demented, paralytic affected speech & brain.
That he has applied for pension under Original No., 565,105; that he is now a pensioner under Certificate No. 565-
105.

Transcript of a letter in the file of Samuel Shue from A.D. Schaeffer to Samuel B. Lawrence. - A.A.Genl 8th Army Corps

Samuel B. Lawrence. - A.A.Genl 8th Army Corps
Dear sir -
I address you for information in reference to the following case - Samuel H. Shue, a Private in Company
commanded by Captain Seidenstricker of the 1st Md. P.H.B - (afterwards the 18th Md Regt) was guilty of committing
an assault and battery pervious to his enlistment in the Army, which assault was committed in a drunken Riot, He was
indicted by the Grand Jury for Carroll County at the September Term 1864 for "assault with intent to kill" - Whilst he
was home on furlough, some time last winter (being sick). He was arrested by the civil authorities and lodged in the jail
of Carroll County. He was not tried until the May Term 1865 - On the 10th day of May in the year 1865 was tried in the
Circuit Court for Carroll County and adjudged "guilty of Assault & Battery" by said Court and sentenced to pay a fine of

fifty dollars, and to be confined in the jail of Carroll County for the period of sixty days - which time has just expired -
During his confinement in the jail aforesaid his company and Regiment have been Discharged - He being unable to
receive his discharge on account of his confinement as aforesaid -
During his confinement he was quiet and a perfect gentleman, as the officers of the jail are anxious to testify -
He is anxious to Report himself to some Military authorities to receive his Discharge. He does not know where to
Report as his Regiment is no longer in existence- He has no desire whatever to evade the Military authorities-
Will you be so kind as to inform me where said Samuel H. Shue shall report to receive his discharge and he will
report himself accordingly.
The States Attorney; the Office of the Court and all who know him are anxious that he be Dischared as he is a
peaceable and respected citizen.

Testimony of the Deputy Sheriff (certified by a Justice of the Peace,)
Samuel H. Shue a Private in Company "E" of the 13th Regiment of Maryland volunteers was arrested by me, upon a
Bench Warrant issued out of the Circuit Court for Carroll County, on the 20th day of November 1864 and was confined
in the jail of Carroll County from the time of his arrest until the 11th day of July 1865.

In this, that the said Samuel H. Shue private of Company "E" 1st Maryland Regiment Potomac Home Brigade
Volunteers being in the service of the United States having received permission to go to his home to attend the
election for the 30th day of March 1864 to the 8 day of April 1864 (by an order issued by the Secretary of War) did not
return to his company on the 8th day of April 1864 according to the order given, and remained absent from his
company until the 13th day of June 1864 at which time he returned to camp with two of the men of his company who
were on passes.
