This work honors my grandparents Joseph & Emma Stangeland. They were married in 1904 and between then and 1914 built most of the basic structures on their Iowa farm. The top venue shows the simple 2 story house they built in 1905; in later years they added additional rooms, porches and balconies for their growing family. They became mainly dairy farmers, Emma is shown milking a cow called Dragos. They also raised sheep, hogs, and chickens and planted corn, oats, and alfalfa on their 40 acres which became 120 acres over the next 30 years. The bottom venue shows the main barn being framed in 1907 and the finished barn in 1909. It was a beautiful and very successful farm in the early years and a great place for us children to grow up. |

This work celebrates the lives of Emma Kloster Stangeland & Joseph Stangeland, our Norwegian grandparents and their parents Aanen & Gertrude Stangeland, and Anders & Inger Kloster. The farm in the upper venue was built by Aanen & Gertrude and the farm in the lower venue was Joseph & Emma’s. My grandmother Emma took family photographs with her Brownie camera from 1904 until she died in 1946. It was an amazing camera, the images she left us are an invaluable heritage and have allowed her descendants to reconstruct and appreciate the lives that they lived. We'll be using them for years to come. |
